A planned heritage town

Kenmare's streets were laid out by Sir William Petty in the 17th century, giving it its distinctive triangular plan.

After the Cromwellian wars, the land was granted to Sir William Petty, who planned the town around 1670. Henry Street, Main Street and Shelbourne Street form a triangle with the square at its heart. Look out for Cromwell's Bridge, a small old bridge over the Finnihy River, and the site of Ireland's first suspension bridge (1841) across the Kenmare River.
